Transport Minister refuses to privatize Tmcel and LAM. He already has an "escape" plan under consideration

Ministro dos transportes se recusa a privatizar a Tmcel e LAM. Já tem um plano de “fuga” em análise

The reform plan for Mozambique Telecom (Tmcel) and Mozambique Airlines (LAM) will be presented within the first three months of next year. The project aims to avoid the privatization of the two companies in a weakened economic situation.

The information was provided on Thursday by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, at the XL Coordinating Council of the Institution, reports ClubofMozambique, citing the Mozambican Information Agency (AIM).

After several civil society actors admitted that only the privatization of these companies would restore their financial sustainability, the Minister refuses to go down that road.

Magala said he had received a preliminary report on Wednesday and guarantees that, by the first quarter of 2023, "we will have a solid basis for the two companies to emerge from their current dismal [financial] situation".

On that occasion, the Minister refused to ever say that he would pursue the privatization of these companies, but welcomed the possibility of "pursuing the worst options" in order to "make good reforms". Magala was thus reacting to the voices in the public debate that suggest privatizing the companies.
