Mining company Vulcan plans to invest one billion dollars in environmental sustainability

Mineradora Vulcan projecta investir mil milhões de dólares na área de sustentabilidade ambiental

The Indian mining company Vulcan, which operates the Moatize coal mine in the central Mozambican province of Tete, plans to invest one billion dollars over the next few years in the areas of environmental sustainability, recycling of mining waste and its transformation, and renewable energies..

The information was revealed last week after a meeting between the CEO of the Indian mining company, Anoop Kumar, and Finance Minister Carla Loveira.

On the occasion, according to a publication on the Ministry of Finance's website, Vulcan's CEO assured "the mining company's commitment to the sustainability and well-being of the Cateme-Moatize community".

For her part, the Minister of Finance welcomed the leaders' intention and stressed that the government was ready to cooperate with the institution. "We are proud to welcome you so that we can continue the work you have been doing, now looking more closely at issues of environmental sustainability," she said.

In December, the Tete Provincial Administrative Court ordered mining company Vulcan Moçambique to suspend all coal mining activities in sections 4 and 6 of its operation within 72 hours, following a case brought by the Human Rights Association of Tete, which accuses the multinational of causing environmental pollution with a negative impact on the surrounding communities.
