Men's Basketball may drop out of AfroCan due to derisory lack of money to pay for logistics

Masculinos do Basquetebol podem desistir do AfroCan pela falta irrisória de dinheiro para arcar com a logística

The men's national basketball team may drop out of the second edition of AfroCan due to lack of money. The competition takes place between July 8 and 16, andin Luanda, Angola.

If this happens, it will be the second time in a row that the national team has withdrawn from the competition after qualifying. The first qualification took place in 2019.

The Mozambican Basketball Federation is short of a paltry 1,300,000 meticais to cover the logistics of the trip.

"To be frank, I have to say that all the conditions are not in place for us to travel to AfroCan. We have been facing daily difficulties," said Roque Sebastião, president of the FMB.

The plan is to collect the money until the last minute of the flight to Luanda. "In any case, we have faith," he said, quoted by the News. If this doesn't happen, the FMB could postpone the trip, considering that the game doesn't start until Sunday (09). But it would have to bear the financial costs of canceling the 20 or so tickets. Or it could even give up and subject itself to administrative and reputational consequences inside and outside the country.

"The biggest challenge is to guarantee accommodation and food in Luanda," he said.
