Demonstrations could jeopardize salary payments, warns Nyusi

Manifestações podem comprometer pagamento de salários, avisa Nyusi

The payment of salaries to civil servants could be jeopardized by the demonstrations, the President of the Republic (PR) warned this morning.

During a meeting he held with the rectors of public and private universities, the PR explained that the post-election protests have already delayed the collection of tax revenues.

To date, he said, only around 80% of tax revenue has been collected. As he said, this is lower than usual and planned for normal periods.

"There is an effort to make the economic frontiers unviable, especially the one in Ressano. Product shortages have already begun.... There's also the problem of tax revenues, which are falling. This morning's information has encouraged me a little because until the day before yesterday I wasn't satisfied. But now they've managed to collect up to 80% of the forecast by November. Normally, at this point it even goes up and exceeds the forecast. And this agitates me because I may not be able to pay teachers' and nurses' salaries. We don't have a donated budget, like other governments that have been so lucky, I've never had that luck. Ten years, I've never been that lucky," he warned, lamenting.

In this vein, Nyusi believes that his governance, without external support to pay salaries, has been proof that Mozambicans have given and can give their best.

"[We would have done more] if we had implemented other containment measures, such as reducing or eliminating corruption," he said.
