Flights from Mozambique to other countries or vice-versa are running as normal, as a source assured this afternoon. MZNews.
Contrary to information circulating on social media about the cancellation of flights by international airlines, the aviation source with inside information said there were no records of canceled flights.
"So far everything is running smoothly. Our system, which lets us know about cancellations and bookings in real time, hasn't registered or received any notifications to this effect," said the source, stressing that "we always get this kind of information first hand".
The source promised to contact MZNews in the event that there is true and official information about the suspension of flights.
Today marks the start of the fourth stage of the post-election demonstrations called by independent candidate Venâncio Mondlane. In communicating the guidelines for the protests, Mondlane "advised", among other precautionary measures, the cancellation of flights.
Meanwhile, yesterday Aeroportos de Moçambique issued a statement saying that airport operations were proceeding normally.
O MZNews tried unsuccessfully to get statements on the subject from Mozambique Airlines and some international companies.
Update (12:35):
Recent information (after the above text was published) obtained by MZNews indicate that an international flight has been canceled. It was the Angolan airline Transportes Aéreos Angolanos (TAAG), which yesterday canceled a flight to Maputo. However, this does not seem to be due to the demonstrations taking place in Mozambique, as the same company also canceled a flight to Cape Town, South Africa yesterday. It is suspected that this is due to the visit of Joe Biden, the current President of the United States of America, to Angola. In fact MZNews knows that this was a security measure, and there are even neighborhoods in the capital Luanda where the normal movement of people and goods is restricted due to Biden's stay.
On the other hand, it should be remembered that the information provided by the MZNews was merely about international flights, although the title of the text made no such reference. As for domestic flights, it was important to have information from Mozambique Airlines, but we were unable to do so. Nevertheless, we learned that yesterday there were the usual cases of domestic flights being canceled at various airports in the country. In fact, several videos circulating on social media attest to this.
For future cases, this site can be used to clear up doubts and rumors about flight cancellations and the like.
