The violence in Mozambique has forced trade and travel to be diverted from the Lebombo border post in South Africa to the Mananga border post in Eswatini, with Mananga serving as a makeshift lifeline for those seeking passage from Mozambique.
According to a VOAThe commissioner of South Africa's Border Management Authority, Michael Masiapato, said that although the authorities are managing the crisis, it continues to pose significant challenges.
"Even (...) when you deploy the military and police officers in the corridor [between the capital, Maputo, and the border], you can't cover all the areas. The protests are very sporadic and very widespread," said Michael Masiapato.
Following the controversial electoral victory of presidential candidate Daniel Chapo, declared by the Constitutional Council last Monday (23), Mozambique was plunged into turmoil, leaving dozens dead as a result of violent protests.
