Insecurity in Cabo Delgado continues to hinder delivery of humanitarian aid

Insegurança em Cabo Delgado continua a dificultar entrega de ajuda humanitária

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says that the intensification of insecurity in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado is hampering humanitarian assistance to the victims of terrorism in that province and warns that, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, support for displaced people in the north of the country is decreasing.

The ICRC's programme coordinator in Mozambique, Mariana Camarote, said that one of the organization's biggest challenges is gaining access to the areas where people affected by the armed conflict are found.

"We need to have safe access to the areas affected by the conflict, and that can only happen when security issues are guaranteed to our teams," he told VOA.

In Cabo Delgado, the ICRC is working on two fronts: the distribution of household utensils, hygiene products and material to cover homes, and the provision of seeds and other agricultural inputs.

Camarote warned that in a context in which the international community is feeling the effects of the Russian-Ukrainian war, we should also look at the victims of the conflict in Cabo Delgado.

She concluded that "since the beginning of the year, the international community's attention has turned to Europe, because of the conflict in Ukraine, and our appeal is for aid to the affected population in Cabo Delgado not to diminish".
