The southern province of Inhambane needs almost 300 million meticais for post-cyclone recoverya source from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management announced on Wednesday.
"For the province to return to what it was before the passage of these cyclones, we are needing an amount of about 291 million meticais," said Cândido Mapute, delegate of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in Inhambane.
The delegate was speaking during a session of the emergency operating center, where the impact of the rainy and cyclonic season 2020-2021 was analyzed.
Mozambique has been plagued since October by extreme weather events, most notably storm Chalane and cyclones Eloise and Guambe, in addition to other weeks of heavy rain and flooding.
According to the responsible, the areas that most need intervention are agriculture, education, health, and for access roads.
"For the urgent needs, especially for the most affected districts, we are talking about 41 million meticais that the government must urgently mobilize to meet" the province's needs, he said.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by climate change in the world, facing cyclical flooding and tropical cyclones.
