Violations of the closed season in the fishing sector continue to worry the authorities. In fact, from November 15 last year to March 14 this year, more than eight tons of fish were seized, a figure that, despite being lower than in the previous period, raises concerns about compliance with the restriction.
According to the director of the Inspection Division at the National Institute of the Sea (INAMAR), César Nhampossa, fines worth 1.5 million meticais were imposed on different players, especially traders.
In all, around six tons of fish, 1.5 tons of shrimp and 500 kilograms of crab were seized, as well as various prohibited fishing gear.
Compared to the previous fishing season, this year there were fewer seizures and fines. In 2024, 18 tons were seized and penalties amounting to five million meticais were imposed. This year, the reduction in violations was the result of intensified inspection and the involvement of community fishing councils.
Quoted by NewsThe source stressed that the highest number of offenses was recorded in the provinces of Zambézia, specifically in the districts of Pebane, Quelimane and Chinde, and in Sofala - Ampara, Muaza and the city of Beira.
The assessment comes at a time when fishermen are calling for the closure period to be reduced, arguing that it is detrimental to their livelihoods. However, the maritime authorities explain that the temporary ban does not mean a total ban on fishing, but a restriction on the use of harmful fishing gear that endangers life and the reproduction and development of fish.
