The Zóbuè border post, located in Tete province and constituting one of the main entry and exit corridors between Mozambique and Malawi, recorded an estimated loss of around 6.6 million meticais, resulting from the interruption in the collection of road and customs transit fees.
According to a NewsThe economic impact is due to the week-long stoppage imposed by Malawian truck drivers who, in protest at the insecurity on the stretch between the city of Moatize and the town of Mussacama, in the same district, blocked the circulation of heavy vehicles from Mozambique on the Malawian side.
Drivers who regularly use the Beira corridor to transport goods via the National Road Number Seven (N7) demanded greater protection from the authorities, given the succession of episodes of violence and robberies that have taken place on the road.
The blockade was lifted on Thursday morning (27) after talks between representatives of the governments of Mozambique and Malawi. The Mozambican authorities undertook to reinforce security on that stretch, with the implementation of escorts to guarantee the physical integrity of the transporters.
The resumption of activities at the Zóbuè post should gradually restore the flow of trade and customs, although the financial impact of the stoppage is still being assessed by the competent authorities.
