Government strengthens mechanisms to control and manage fertilizers in the country

Governo reforça mecanismos para controlo e gestão de fertilizantes no País

The government, through the Council of Ministers, approved a new fertilizer management regulation last week, with one of the main objectives being "to bring greater security to the quality of fertilizers circulating in the country".

The new regulation, according to data from the National Directorate for Agricultural Health and Biosafety, fills in some of the gaps in the previous one and responds to the current challenges posed by new trends in the production sector.

Cited by Terra MagazineThe new regulation, whose principle is to safeguard public and animal health and the environment, "applies to the registration, production, packaging, repackaging, storage, labelling, display, distribution, handling, donation, marketing, import, export, transport, transit, advertising, use and disposal of all fertilizers, by natural or legal persons".

With the revision made, the Executive believes that the country now has a legislative framework "with greater legal clarity, which allows for correct action in the market".

For the National Directorate of Agricultural Health and Biosafety, the new regulation brings advantages such as ensuring "greater security over the quality of fertilizers circulating in the country, clarifying the treatment of the different application processes, better use of registration fees and sanctions, greater flexibility in responding to registration requests and a review of the import tax, among others".
