Government opens exhibition on Malangatana

Governo inaugura a exposição sobre Malangatana

Last night, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Eldevina Materula, inaugurated the exhibition "Yes, music is beautiful: the path to restoring the 'work' (1967) by the artist Malangatana at the National Art Museum (MUSART).

"The exhibition that we have the privilege of inaugurating today (yesterday) is part of the government's efforts to promote proactive action to preserve the national artistic heritage, whose custodians are private and/or public entities," said Materula in his speech

She said that the exhibition represents the culmination of a joint partnership that contributes to the preservation of the heritage present here, made up of 14 works of art by the late and renowned artist Master Malangatana Ngwenya.

According to the minister, the inaugural exhibition is the result of an initiative to preserve the country's artistic heritage in partnership with MOLDARTE and the Friends of the Museum. It was launched as part of a process to restore the work of the artist Malangatana, under the initiative of Absa Bank, which has been a true partner in promoting Mozambican plastic arts.

"This exhibition has a didactic-pedagogical nature as it aims to raise awareness among society in general, and among owners of works of art in particular, of the importance and impact of restoration work, as well as to promote and disseminate technical expertise in this field," said the minister.

"Malangatana's art reminds us of the cultural richness and transformative capacity of artistic expression, so it inspires us, raising awareness of the importance of restoration," the minister emphasized to an audience packed with individuals linked to the arts.

The exhibition will be open to the public until June 9, 2024, and "as such, I would like to take this opportunity to invite all lovers of the arts and cultures to visit and get to know a little-known work by our great master".
