The Mozambican government admits that the funding cuts being implemented by the United States of America (USA) could affect some development projects in Mozambique.
The Minister for Planning and Development, Salimo Valá, pointed out on Monday (03), during the ceremony to celebrate Mozambican Heroes' Day in Maputo, that the infrastructure project in Zambézia financed under the Millennium Challenge Account is one of those that could be jeopardized by the new measures of the US government.
However, Valá, quoted by Radio MozambiqueHe hopes that the US government will reflect internally. "The US is an important partner for Mozambique. We hope it will be a period of internal reflection and I think they will then review it. We have, for example, the case of Zambezia, which benefited from over 500 million dollars from the Millennium Challenge Account and could be very important for the economic and social transformation of the province," he explained.
Even so, the minister expects funding to resume soon. "We believe they will resume cooperation, the United States is an important partner, they need time to reflect internally to make adjustments to their strategies, bearing in mind that it's a new cycle," he concluded.
Yesterday, Elon Musk said that President Donald Trump has agreed that the United States Agency for International Development needs to be "shut down", after days of speculation about the agency's future after its funding was frozen and dozens of its employees were put on leave.
"As far as the USAID stuff, I talked about that with [the president] in detail and he agreed that we should shut it down," Musk said in a conversation at X Spaces on Monday.
