Frelimo convenes Central Committee to elect new party leader

Frelimo convoca Comité Central para eleger o novo líder do partido

Frelimo's Central Committee will elect the party's new leader at an extraordinary session called by the Political Commission for May 3, spokeswoman Ludmila Maguni said on Monday.

The meeting that will reveal the name of the figure to replace Filipe Nyusi will take place at the party school in the city of Matola.

Meanwhile, according to Maguni, the party has not yet received any formal proposal for the successor to the current party president and possible candidate for the presidential elections on October 9.

"So far, no candidates have been put forward and we don't have any names to announce," he said, warning that "we may have more information" before the extraordinary session of the Central Committee takes place.

According to Maguni, the Political Commission is complying with the directives issued by the third Central Committee held at the beginning of this month.

"What the Political Commission is now doing is demanding from the Central Committee that the Political Commission should present candidates who will be taken to the Central Committee to be chosen. And when we have the names to announce, that will be done," he said.
