Last Friday, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) connected the administrative post of Mazucane, in the district of Chongoene, Gaza province, to the national power grid, becoming the 37th post out of a total of 45 that should be lit up by 2024.
The infrastructure was built as part of the "Energy for All" project and cost the state coffers about 37 million meticais. The electrification consisted of 38 kilometers of medium voltage line, three 160kVA transformer stations and two 100 kVA transformer stations, 12 kilometers of low voltage line and 150 public lighting poles.
The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, presided over the inauguration ceremony and said that this post is a demonstration of the government's efforts to expand the social and economic infrastructure in an attempt to leverage the national economy and the well-being of the population, especially in rural areas.
After the electrification of administrative posts this year, more than 2.5 million households will have access to electricity from the national grid for the first time, and more than 3.5 million by the end of 2024.
Nyusi stressed that the government will increase electricity generation by another 600 megawatts, as well as build new transmission lines that will allow Mozambique to consolidate itself as a regional energy pole.
The President also inaugurated two photovoltaic plants in the district of Chibuto in Changanine and Alto Changane with capacity to generate 72 and 115 megawatts, respectively.
