90 houses built for victims of Cyclone Idai in Sofala

Construídas 90 casas para as vítimas de ciclone Idai em Sofala

The government, through the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, today delivered 90 houses to families who were victims of Cyclone Idai, in Dondo district, Sofala province. These are Type 1 houses financed by the European Union (EU), built under the Recovery Mechanism for Mozambique.

According to Osvaldo Machatine, who was speaking after the handover ceremony, in the resettlement center of Mutua, Dondo district, the construction of the houses results from a financial contribution of 34.3 million euros from the EU to the recovery mechanism.

This is an initiative that is being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

"The result of this intervention is quite significant for educational development for the students and other users," Osvaldo Machatine said.

The buildings are endowed with resilience, given the region's propensity to natural disasters, especially floods and cyclones.

For his part, the EU ambassador in Mozambique, António Gaspar, assured total availability to support the government in the recovery of the areas hit by Cyclone idai, since enormous challenges still prevail in terms of infrastructure.

"The European Union expresses its full availability to support Mozambique in several other areas of urgent intervention, with a view to economic recovery and creation of development," Gaspar stressed.
