"It is up to provincial and municipal governments to decide on transportation pricing"

“Compete aos governos provinciais e municipais decidirem sobre preço de transporte”

The Minister of Transport and Communications distances himself from the increase in the price of transport in the country and says this is a decision that is up to the provincial and municipal governments.

The ruler made this pronouncement in the face of cases of paralysis of activity as pressure to increase the cost of travel.

"It is up to local governments to decide on the increase of the transport fare," said Janfar Abdulai, in statements quoted by Lusa.

According to Abdulai, the central government has supported the provincial and municipal executives in their search for a solution to the difficulties that the road carriers claim to be facing in order to maintain their activity, given the increase in fuel prices.

On Monday, the Mozambican Road Transport Carriers Federation (FEMATRO) called for "urgent actions and not just words" from the Government aiming to avoid a general strike in public passenger transport in the face of rising fuel prices.

"The public passenger transport sector needs urgent actions and not just words, because the activity is unsustainable," said the president of FEMATRO, Castigo Nhamane, to Lusa.

Nhamane was speaking about the recent multiplication of cases of paralysis of public transport in some cities, in protest against the latest rise in fuel prices in the country.
