Maputo City expects to produce more than nine thousand tons of fish

The city of Maputo expects to produce 9,423 tons of various types of fish, compared to 9,239 last year, which corresponds to a growth of two percent.

The data was released last Friday (14) by the Secretary of State for Maputo City, Vicente Joaquim, at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Fishing Campaign", which coincides with the end of the closed season for mangrove crabs and surface shrimp.

"For the current year, production is expected to be around 9,423.7 tons of various types of fish, and this target represents an increase of 2 percent when compared to the previous season, which was around 9,239 tons," said Vicente.

Cited by AIMHe explained that, in this campaign, the authorities will discourage the use of harmful gear, illegal fishing, the cutting and occupation of mangrove areas and other practices that jeopardize the preservation and sustainability of the aquatic environment, as well as focusing on increasing production and productivity.

"The aim of this event is therefore to raise awareness and persuade the involvement of entities at all levels - central, provincial, especially at district level, local structures, including the Community Fishing Councils - of the need for positive behavioral change in the use of aquatic resources after the closed season," he said.

The Secretary of State for the city of Maputo encouraged the community authorities and the Community Fishing Councils to take primary responsibility for ensuring compliance with the management measures in the fishing campaign in order to achieve the desired production.

Joaquim reiterated his commitment to fulfilling and enforcing the noble task of improving the quality of life of families by promoting sustainable fishing.

The city of Maputo currently has 3,194 fishermen, 517 boats and 48 fishponds.
