Municipal police candidates expelled for corruption during training

Candidatos à polícias municipais são expulsos por corrupção no decurso da formação

Nine of the 84 Chimoio Municipal Police officers recently trained in road safety in Manica were expelled in the course of their training for having engaged in acts of corruption when training as traffic regulators.

Josefina Fernandes, head of the Traffic Police Department in the Provincial Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, said that acts of corruption tarnish the class and therefore should not be tolerated.

"There are colleagues who didn't make it to the end of the training because of corruption. During the internship they engaged in acts of corruption, which led to their expulsion from the course," said Jsefina Fernandes.

The official was speaking during the closing of the training course for traffic regulation agents, in the municipality of Chimoio.

He called on the 75 officers who have reached the end of the course to distance themselves from unlawful acts to avoid being prosecuted and punished disciplinarily and/or criminally.

When asked to comment on the act, the prosecutor of the Economic and Related Crimes Section in Manica, Saquina Dzenga, who was among the trainers, assured that the Public Ministry will initiate proceedings to hold the trainees indicted for corruption accountable.

The training in road safety to which the aforementioned officers of the City Police were subjected, aimed to provide, especially to the traffic police officers, knowledge that will allow them to contribute to the reduction of accident cases, which tend to increase in the city, involving vehicles and taxi-motorcycles.

The president of the Municipal Council of Chimoio, João Ferreira, who directed the closing of the event, warned the agents to distance themselves from deviant conducts.

"Some municipal police officers didn't listen well to the guidance that was being given and chose other paths. Although they were identified during the training, they will be prosecuted disciplinarily, if criminal proceedings do not fit," Ferreira said.

Ferreira also said that Chimoio is known, in the country, as one of the cities in development, in several areas, and this merit cannot be put in question and tarnished by the negative performance of some municipal police officers.
