On Tuesday, South African carrier Airlink canceled flights to Nampula, Mozambique. The measure follows a provisional order from a Mozambican court to seize three planes.
According to a publication on the Eyewitness NewsOn December 7, 2024, two Mozambican citizens were expelled from an Airlink flight in Johannesburg for unruly and threatening behavior.
Subsequently, the citizens concerned took Airlink to a Mozambican court to contest the action and, although they received an order to seize the plane, when the court officials tried to do so, they were unsuccessful.
In the meantime, Airlink has appointed a lawyer in Mozambique to establish its rights under Mozambican law to prevent the execution of the court order.
"We do not believe that their claim or the district court order they obtained has any merit. In addition to legal channels, because Airlinks flights to Mozambique are operated under the bilateral air services agreement between South Africa and Mozambique, we have also requested assistance from the South African Department of Transport and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation to resolve the matter through diplomatic channels. We will continue to monitor the situation," said Airlink's CEO and managing director, Rodger Foster in the same publication.
