Illegal timber exports from Cabo Delgado aborted

Abortada exportação ilegal de madeira a partir de Cabo Delgado

The authorities have stopped the illegal export of 65 containers of roundwood in the cities of Montepuez and Pemba, in operations carried out in these two regions of Cabo Delgado province.

The illegal action was frustrated thanks to an anonymous tip. According to Mário Parina, substitute of the delegate of the National Agency for the Control of Environmental Quality (AQUA), the institution had received an indication of a shipment of roundwood, allegedly destined for China.

"After the complaint, we dispatched a team of inspectors to Montepuez, where they found that 43 containers with logs and squared wood were about to be illegally exported, while in Pemba there were 22 containers," he told the newspaper Notícias.
