Cyclone Jude leaves more than 200,000 customers without electricity in Zambézia and Nampula

A total of 206,600 customers are without electricity in the districts of Zambézia and Nampula provinces, in central and northern Mozambique respectively, due to bad weather caused by the passage of tropical cyclone Jude.

According to data updated today, Thursday (13), by the company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), in Zambézia province, the power cuts have affected the districts of Morrumbala, Dere, Inhassunge, Namacurra and the Administrative Posts of Macuse, Maneia and Nabure. In Nampula, customers living on the coast of the province are without electricity, especially those in the districts of Memba, Nacala Velha, Mossuril, Ilha de Moçambique, Muecate, Mogincual, Lalaua, Mecuburi and part of the cities of Nampula and Nacala.

"Due to the bad weather in the north of the country, the provinces of Zambézia and Nampula recorded damage to 74 kilometers of medium and low voltage lines, as well as the collapse of six transformer stations and two high voltage towers on the line between Namialo and Monapo," EDM said in a statement.

According to EDM, the damage caused by the cyclone is estimated at around 100 million meticais.

"At the moment, the access roads are interrupted, making it difficult to restore the electricity supply to the affected customers. Meanwhile, the normal electricity supply has been restored to the districts of Moma, Larde, Meconta and Murrupula, in Nampula province, and the districts of Morrumbala, Dere and Namacurra, in Zambézia province," added the state-owned electricity company.

The tropical cyclone entered Mozambique at dawn on Monday (10), with winds of 140 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 195 kilometers per hour.
