The Mozambican Tax Authority (AT) announced yesterday, Saturday (09), the reopening of the Ressano Garcia border crossing, which had been closed following the vandalization of its infrastructure during the demonstrations last Thursday (07).
In an AIM publication, AT spokesman Fernando Tinga assured that all the legal conditions have been created so that the border can once again operate within the required standards.
"We want to say that the conditions are in place for checking the legality of the goods entering this border of Mozambique, as well as leaving," said Tinga, pointing out that at kilometer 4, which is the cargo terminal, all the trucks that were prevented from carrying out customs checks within the normal limits are positioned.
The source said that the system is fully operational and is complementary to the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) that are covering the perimeter to ensure the physical safety of people and those who are passing through, lamenting the losses caused by the protests affecting the country following the announcement of the election results by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
"The losses are around 400 million meticais (around 6.3 million dollars), and we lost five vehicles. AT is already repairing the damage," said Tinga.
Ressano Garcia's border has a target for this month of collecting 1.7 billion meticais.
"Just to give the total from the point of view of losses, if we break down the 1.7 billion meticais that is the target for the month, if we break it down by 30 days it gives a figure of 50 million a day, just to see it is 400 million meticais," Tinga added.
On that occasion, the president of the Tax Authority (PCA), Elisa Zacarias, accompanied by other senior officials from the institution, climbed over the border to certify its reoperationalization.
