Mozambique to supply 100 MW of power to South Africa

Moçambique vai fornecer 100 MW de energia a África do Sul

South Africa is going through an unprecedented energy crisis and is looking to Mozambique for solutions. This Monday, the South African Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgop, met with the Mozambican Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias.

For the time being, in order to relieve the pressure on ESKOM by supplying 100 MW of energy from the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric plant, Carlos Zacarias announced. South Africa has an energy deficit of 6 000 MW, according to the South African portal IOL.

According to the Minister, quoted by Rádio Moçambique, these are short-term solutions and there are others to be considered.

"Among the short-term solutions we are discussing is the rapid supply of 100 MW, which will be subject to approval, and also in the medium term the start-up of some projects we have in Maputo, Ressano Garcia, and the start-up of the Temane Thermal Power Plant, and in the long term the Mphanda Nkuwa project," he said.

The South African side thanked Mozambique for its willingness to help supply electricity to put an end to the crisis.

"We are extremely grateful to the Mozambican people for making 100 MW available to us. I think this is confirmation of the good state of our relations and we want this to continue in the future," said the South African minister.
