Kenya to build three more ships to transport fuel to Uganda

Quénia vai construir mais três navios para transportar combustível para o Uganda

Kenya plans to build three more ships to increase the export of oil products to Uganda via Lake Victoria.

The Secretary of State for Energy and Petroleum, Davis Chirchir, said that this measure will guarantee daily trips instead of the current weekly trips to the landlocked country.

"We've started building three more ships so that the quay can handle daily shipments," said the secretary.

Kenya only shipped 20 million liters of petroleum products, despite the fact that it was opened at the beginning of January.

He noted that the 14.57 million dollar project completed in February 2018 is being underutilized, but says the government is on the right track to regain its share of the East African oil export market.

Chirchir said that transportation across the lake would help reduce road congestion and improve the reliability of supplies.

According to the minister, a single ship crossing the lake with the capacity to transport 4.5 million liters of oil products is equivalent to 135 trucks.

The oil jetty, whose construction was completed in February 2018, was only put into operation in January 2023 due to a prolonged delay in completing the construction of a corresponding facility in Uganda.
