Parliament postpones debate on electoral law revision

Parlamento adia debate sobre revisão da lei eleitoral

The Frelimo parliamentary bench has just announced the postponement sine die of the debate initially scheduled for tomorrow on the draft law revising Law no. 8/2013, of February 27, which establishes the legal framework for the election of the President of the Republic and Members of the Assembly of the Republic, amended and republished by Law no. 12/2019, of May 31.

The caucus spokesman, Feliz Sílvia, quoted by the newspaper Domingo, told a press conference today that the postponement was in response to a request from Renamo, which wants more time to reflect on the draft revision of the electoral law, authored by Frelimo.

Frelimo submitted two proposals for revision to the Standing Committee of the Assembly of the Republic and in its reasoning states that "by virtue of Article 311(3) of the Constitution of the Republic, the first district elections are scheduled to be held in 2024, as a result of the consensus reached by the government with Renamo, in the context of the process of seeking effective peace and national reconciliation".

Frelimo adds that as the aforementioned date approaches, various segments of society, including politicians, academics, journalists, civil society and others have expressed concerns.
