Mozambique and Brazil sign an agreement for cooperation in the agricultural sector

The Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and the Mozambican Chamber of Commerce signed a cooperation agreement in the agricultural sector a few days ago in Maputo, with the aim of transferring technology from Brazil to Mozambique for the development of agriculture.

Hipólito Hamela, economic advisor to the Mozambican Chamber of Commerce, said that in addition to the transfer of technology, through equipment, the agreement also allows for the transfer of knowledge, as well as the development of seeds adaptable to Mozambique's climate.

"The overall aim is to develop agriculture to reduce poverty in Mozambique," said Hamela during a press conference with journalists. According to the source, the program to be developed by the two chambers will focus on two essential crops: rice and oilseeds. And speaking of these crops, the economist pointed out that Mozambique is a country with a considerable deficit in the production of these products.

"If you look at our agricultural trade balance, you'll see that of the approximately one million dollars we import in agricultural products, 220 million is rice and around 160 million dollars is oilseeds, so the production of these crops is going to have a very big impact on our trade balance," he said.

While oilseed production could be nationwide, rice will be focused only on the provinces of Gaza and Zambézia.

It should be noted that, initially, the agreement signed here will last for two years, with the possibility of it being renewed if one of the parties so decides.
