The Deputy Head of the USAID Health Office, Julie Boccanera, and the Secretary of State of Zambézia Province, Stella Cristina de Jesus Xavier Mafumo, inaugurated a state-of-the-art oxygen production plant at Mocuba District Hospital.

According to a USAID statement, the factory represents the US government's continued commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Mozambique.

With the capacity to generate 283 liters of medical-grade oxygen per minute, the plant ensures a consistent and reliable supply of oxygen, crucial for treating respiratory diseases and improving maternal and child health.

This initiative, which represents an investment of more than 1 million dollars, including construction and technical assistance, underlines the US government's dedication to promoting sustainable solutions in the health sector.

With the capacity to fill up to 10 oxygen cylinders a day, the plant will benefit not only the Mocuba General Hospital, but also 16 other nearby health units and neighboring districts, benefiting more than 2.5 million people.

US Ambassador Peter Vrooman said that "this collaboration demonstrates the collective effort to strengthen Mozambique's health infrastructure and its preparedness for future challenges."

The development follows the installation of a similar oxygen plant at the Monapo District Hospital in Nampula province.

It is an example of the partnership between the Ministry of Health, the US Embassy and implementing partners such as JHPIEGO and Chemonics in promoting healthcare resilience and response capacity.
