Politician Venâncio Mondlane announced yesterday a set of 25 governance measures for the next hundred days, in the hope of returning power to the people.
Mondlane is claiming victory in the 2024 general elections, and since October 21 he has unleashed post-election demonstrations. Acts of police violence have led to the deaths of more than 500 Mozambicans, according to civil society organizations.
With this last point in mind, Mondlane put in the front line measures such as: the cessation of police violence; the unconditional release of citizens detained in the demonstrations, within a period of no more than three weeks; free medical and medication assistance for those abused by the police.
Mondlane also decreed the interruption of work activities every Friday, between 1pm and 3pm, for the singing of the national anthem. Later, at 9pm, he proposes vuvuzeladas and whistles.
The expression "Hanamalala", which means "it's over" in Emákwa, is now "the official daily greeting at national level".
The decree also provides for financial compensation of at least 200,000 meticais for each family bereaved as a result of the demonstrations.
Mondlane extends the deadline for non-payment of tolls throughout the country until April 27.
Among other measures, whose "Official Decree 001/2025 of January 20" will be published today, are mechanisms for returning power to the people, according to Mondlane.
Other measures:
The public sector must provide free drinking water for all Mozambicans. Private suppliers must reduce the rate at which they charge; domestic gas must be reduced by 50% from the current cost; the electricity tariff must be reduced by 50% from current prices; state institutions must ensure that all basic identification documents are issued free of charge; the price of cement must be set below 300 meticais; an end to illicit charges by all workers in the public sector; suspension of vehicle inspections; exemption from Value Added Tax for basic products; reintroduce free school lunches; primary and secondary school fees should also be free; end contributions for school guards; end the radio tax; Suspension of timber exports; right to legitimate self-defense for the people; closure of environmentally unfriendly projects; de-partisanship of the public good; tax exemption for small and medium-sized enterprises in the first year of activity; negotiation of development agreements in the communities; funds for small and medium-sized enterprises affected by the demonstrations; presentation of the new flag.
