The European Commission has now proposed the digitization of passports and identity documents, such as the citizen's card, and the creation of an "EU digital travel app" for travelers in the Schengen Area.
It proposes a common framework for the use of digital travel credentials and an "EU digital travel app", so that travelers can create and store their documents.
Digital passports and identity cards will include the data stored on the 'chips' of physical documents, such as the holder's photograph, but not fingerprints, and can be stored on a cell phone.
It will be completely voluntary for travelers to request or use this digital version of their documents, free of charge.
As far as the app to be created is concerned, it will allow travelers to create digital travel credentials using their passports or, in the case of EU citizens, their identity documents, as well as to submit travel plans and documents to border authorities in advance, reducing waiting times at border posts, since most checks will be completed in advance.
The app will be available to all EU and non-EU citizens with a biometric passport or an EU identity card traveling to or from the Schengen area of free movement.
Currently, these checks are carried out physically at the border crossing point.
According to Brussels, with almost 600 million crossings recorded in 2023 alone, it is necessary to speed up border controls and ensure easier travel, while maintaining a high level of security by ensuring that all travelers are checked.
The proposals will have to be approved by the Council of the EU and the European Parliament, in co-legislation, and are expected to come into force from 2030. (Text: opcaoturismo)
