EU provides 23 million euros to fight food crisis in Mozambique

The European Union (EU) will provide 23 million euros (about 1,430,668,385 meticais) to support the fight against the food crisis in Mozambique. Of this amount, eight million are earmarked for emergency crises.

The aim is to help "mitigate growing food insecurity" in the face of "uncertain climatic and macroeconomic conditions," says a note of the European delegation in Mozambique.

This support will help partner countries and vulnerable people cope with the consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The amount disbursed to Mozambique is part of a 600 million euro package from the European Development Fund that the European bloc has approved to finance immediate humanitarian food aid, food production and food systems resilience in the most vulnerable countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific (ACP).

Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen said the European Union's rapid and comprehensive response to the current food insecurity in several vulnerable partner countries in the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific region "demonstrates our strong solidarity with our partners, particularly in Africa."

Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarcic stressed that "humanitarian aid cannot replace the efforts needed to increase the resilience of the most vulnerable populations," meaning that "sustainable development-oriented solutions to end hunger are key."

Data from the Global Food Crisis Report estimates that some 205.1 million people currently face high levels of acute food insecurity in 45 countries covered in the 2022 Report.

"As part of Team Europe's Response to Global Food Insecurity, funding will focus on where humanitarian needs are highest and where programs have been identified to sustainably increase food security and resilience. For the Southern Africa region, the funding will be as follows: €10 million for Madagascar, €15 million for Malawi, €15 million for Mozambique and €20 million for Zambia. For emergency food aid, are 4 million euros for Madagascar, 8 million euros for Mozambique, 4 million euros for Zimbabwe, and 500 thousand euros for the entire region," reads.
