South African court postpones to August 27 hearing on Chang's extradition challenge

The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg today postponed to August 27 the hearing of the Forum for Budget Monitoring (FMO) challenge to the extradition of former Finance Minister Manuel Chang to his country.

"The subject will be heard at 10:00 a.m. (local time) on Friday, August 27, 2021," states the court order to which Lusa had access.

The South African Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services "has given an undertaking that the first defendant [Manuel Chang] will not be extradited to the republic of Mozambique until sentence is passed in Part A," reads the South African court document.

At issue is the decision announced on Monday to Lusa by the spokesman for the South African Justice Ministry, Chrispin Phiri, reporting that South Africa has decided to extradite to Mozambique former Finance Minister Manuel Chang, arrested in South Africa in 2018 at the request of the United States of America (USA) for fraud and corruption in the hidden debts case.
