The Mozambique LNG project already has 13 of the approximately 15 billion US dollars needed to make gas exploration viable in area 1 of the Rovuma basin.
The information was confirmed by the general director of Total Energies, the French multinational leading the project, according to the newspaper "O Pais".
"U.S. Exim has reconfirmed, reaffirmed its support for the overall financing of the project," said the company's director. "It's very important funding, a critical step."
The project has total funding of around US$ 15 billion, with the participation of several international banks. The Asian banks, especially the Japanese, had already reaffirmed their commitment to the tune of US$ 5 billion.
The support from U.S. Exim adds another US$ 5 billion to the financing. "I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Asian banks for their contribution, and in particular the Japanese," added the executive quoted in the publication.
With US support secured, the expectation now is that two export-credit banks, one from the UK and the other from the Netherlands, will also reaffirm their support.
"We hope that with this recent decision by the United States, they will be in a position to reaffirm, reconfirm the support of the Bank of the United Kingdom and the Bank of the Netherlands very soon," said the president of TotalEnergies.
The breakthrough in obtaining financing is a strategic step to ensure the viability of the project and reinforces TotalEnergies' commitment to its investors and global partners.
