The French oil company TotalEnergies may resume the exploration operations of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), in the Rovuma Basin, in Cabo Delgado province, as soon as the conditions are created, promised today the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy.
The Government and TotalEnergies are constantly holding technical meetings to evaluate the situation in the province to assess the feasibility of resuming the work, according to Carlos Zacarias.
"Naturally, a resumption of activities will depend on each concessionaire's specific perception of safety conditions," stressed the Minister, when speaking to journalists during the seventh coordinating council of the Ministry he heads.
On the occasion, Zacarias acknowledged that in recent times the social conditions in Cabo Delgado have changed drastically due to the occurrence of terrorist acts.
"There are safety-related challenges, which the government is working on, and we see that the situation has changed radically recently. At least from our side, we hope that the conditions that are created will convince Total to resume activities," he said.
Total, whose consortium will invest more than $20 billion in LNG exploration, has suspended development of the project in the region due to a 2021 attack around the development's infrastructure in the Palma district of Cabo Delgado.
