Civil society calls for the creation of a special court to judge crimes in Cabo Delgado

The Monitoring Forum of the UN Universal Periodic Review Mechanism for Human Rights in Mozambique calls for the creation of a special court for Cabo Delgado province to ensure justice for crimes committed by terrorists and the armed forces.

The Executive Director of the Monitoring Forum of the Universal Periodic Review Mechanism for Human Rights in Mozambique, Sousa Chele urges the reinstatement of legality in the actions of foreign forces from Rwanda and SADC that are in Mozambique to help the country fight terrorism.

"We have a recently reported situation of 30 military personnel who are in custody, and what is the jurisdiction for that custody? Because it is said that they supposedly looted banks, but they did not loot banks in a normal situation. This happened in a context of conflict", defends Sousa Chele, reiterating the government to "safeguard human rights and international humanitarian law, creating a special court, urgently, for Cabo Delgado".
