Members of the Portuguese Parliament (AR) are today debating the proposal to revise the Electoral Law in a general and special session.
This is Law no. 8/2013, of February 27, amended and republished by Law no. 2/2019, of May 31, which establishes the legal framework for the election of the President of the Republic and members of the Assembly of the Republic.
Law no. 3/2019, of 31 May, which establishes the legal framework for the election of members of the Provincial Assembly and the Provincial Governor, and Law no. 4/2019, of 31 May, which establishes the principles, rules of organization, competencies and functioning of the Executive Bodies of Decentralized Provincial Governance, will also be under review.
In the view of the Frelimo party, which has a parliamentary majority, today's exercise must ensure transparency in the electoral process, as well as maintaining the integrity of the Constitution of the Republic.
Renamo, the second party with a parliamentary majority, wants the district courts and the Attorney General's Office to have greater autonomy, including to decide whether or not to repeat elections.
The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) wants a new way of distributing minutes and district tabulation notices of election results. The party also proposes that post-election coalitions be formed in the election of provincial assemblies. (Source: News).
