The Niassa Special Reserve will have a new natural resources management plan within this year. This is an instrument that defines the management mechanisms of this conservation area of about forty-two thousand square kilometers.
As part of the preparation of the plan, community consultations have already been held with the governments of the eight districts of Niassa and Cabo Delgado, covered by the Niassa Reserve.
The administrator of the Niassa Special Reserve, Terencio Tamele, pointed to the fight against poaching and uncontrolled burning as aspects that will be prioritized in the instrument.
Cited by Radio Mozambique, Tamele added that the work on the plan is running smoothly and said that the best ways for people, fauna and flora to live together in that conservation area will be defined.
The source added that the management plan intends to recognize the areas for housing, mining, fishing, agriculture and community development.
The development of the plan is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
