"QatarEnergy continues to work with its partners to supply the market with about 65 million additional tons of LNG per year from the North Field (in Qatar) and Golden Pass projects in the United States," Qatar Energy Minister Saad al Kaabi was quoted in a statement as saying.
The goal is to "meet the growing demand for cleaner, low-carbon energy and improve energy security for customers around the world," he added.
Al Kaabi made this statement after signing an agreement with US company ConocoPhillips for the expansion of the North-South Field, which includes two huge LNG production lines with a total capacity of 16 million tons per year.
"As we emphasized earlier, these quantities, which will be produced through the expansion projects, will be the lowest in the world in terms of carbon emissions thanks to carbon capture and sequestration technologies, which will play an important role in supporting the transition to clean energy," the minister further noted.
Qatar has announced in recent months partnership agreements with companies such as Shell, ExxonMobil and TotalEnergies for the expansion of its main gas fields North Field and North-South Field, with which it says it hopes to increase its annual production from 77 to 110 million tons.
Qatar, the world's second largest gas exporter, is one of the countries with which the European Union hopes to replace Russian gas exports in the face of possible sanctions following the war in Ukraine. (Lusa)
