Mozambican boxers prepare for final Olympic qualification

Pugilistas moçambicanos preparam-se para derradeira qualificação olímpica

The national boxers are already working towards their participation in the Olympic Qualification Window, scheduled for May 25 to June 2 in Thailand's capital, Bangkok.

A report in the newspaper Desafio says that the national team works out every day in two-day training sessions in the gym at the Francisco Manyanga Secondary School, with nine boxers, eight who are still trying to get to Paris and Alcinda dos Santos, who qualified in the African window, which took place in September last year in Dakar (Senegal). Alcinda is only training to maintain her competitive pace.

These are Solomone Júlio (86 kg), Tiago Muxanga (75), Bernardo Marrime (63, but currently in Ireland, where he lives), Armando Sigaúque (57), Benilde Macaringue (57), Helena Bagão (52), Isabel Mulungo (57) and Rady Gramane (75). Yassine Nordine, in the 52 kg category, is not going to the Thai window due to an injury.

According to the secretary-general of the Mozambican Boxing Federation (FMBoxe), António Hélio, the young boxer recently underwent surgery on one of his arms in Maputo and is expected to be out of the ring for a few months.

In the Thai capital, 51 remaining boxing places at the Paris Games will be contested by boxers from different parts of the world.

Of these 51 places, 28 are for men and 23 for women. There are 13 categories, seven for men and six for women, some with two places and others with just one. This is the last qualification window for the Paris Games.
