Macadamia cultivation, a crop with a high commercial value on the international market, has seen remarkable growth in recent years, reaching a harvest of 5,000 tons in the 2023/24 crop year, with good prospects for the current season.
According to the National Almond Institute, quoted by NewsOverall, production of this crop has been growing every season, with new producers springing up. For example, the country currently has 58 commercial companies dedicated to the cultivation of this almond.
The provinces of Manica, Niassa and Maputo have the highest concentration of commercial producers, ranging from 15 to 18, with plantations covering more than 8,000 hectares.
The main destinations for macadamia nuts produced in Mozambique include South Africa, China and Vietnam.
The institution says that the country has 23 family producers growing this crop, covering 478 hectares. However, there are ongoing awareness-raising, promotion and incentive actions to expand the production of this fruit, given its high commercial value on the international market.
In addition to macadamias, the provinces mentioned above are also leading growers of lychees, most of which are also exported to the West, especially to Holland, France and England.
Last year, lychee exports earned the state more than three million dollars, despite the climatic challenges.
In fact, Mozambique will be placing lychees on the European market in a few weeks' time, which is proof of the efforts made to grow this fruit, which also has great commercial value.
