Portuguese Prime Minister visits Mozambique as part of the Luso-Moçambican Summit

The Prime Minister of Portugal will travel to Maputo on the 11th and 12th on the occasion of the 5th Luso-Moçambican Summit, and will also have institutional meetings with Mozambique's political authorities, businessmen, and the Portuguese community on the agenda.

António Costa's trip to Mozambique was communicated in a note issued yesterday by the Portuguese Prime Minister's office.

In relation to the V Luso-Moçambican Summit, the Portuguese government refers that "its objective is the deepening of bilateral relations and the signing of several cooperation instruments".

In addition to the summit, António Costa's trip program includes political meetings with the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, and the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Esperança Bias.

According to Lusa, the Prime Minister will also have meetings in the economic area with Portuguese businessmen in Mozambique and is also expected to attend a reception with the Portuguese community in the country.

António Costa's visit comes about three and a half days after the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, made his third visit to Mozambique as Portugal's head of state.

In a meeting with about 400 Portuguese residents in Mozambique, the head of state sustained that the relations between the two countries are on an "excellent path" and "advancing on all fronts.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reiterated that as soon as the new Portuguese government takes office, "a date will be set for the" bilateral summit, which was scheduled for November last year and was postponed due to the early legislative elections in Portugal.

"We also want the summit, the summit is crucial. I speak for myself, but I speak for the prime minister," said the head of state, adding that "the prime minister's predisposition is exactly the same.

On the same occasion, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa promised to return to Mozambique in August of this year, to be present at the reopening, after restoration, of the cathedral of Quelimane, provincial capital of Zambézia.
