Port of Nacala breaks cargo record in 2023 by handling 3.1 million tons

The volume of cargo handled at the Port of Nacala, the "heart" of Nampula province in the north of the country, reached a record figure in 2023, after the rehabilitation and modernization of the infrastructure.

Quoted by RFI, the director of the port of Nacala, Naimo Iduna, said that the port of Nacala has attracted new regional operators who are looking for alternatives in the face of pressure on ports in neighboring South Africa.

"In 2023, we will handle 3.1 million tons, which is the record ever handled at the Port of Nacala. This figure is global for three terminals. In 2022, the volume of cargo handled was 2.7 million (...) This overall figure represents 103% of what was the plan for 2023 and around 12.5% more than we handled in 2022," he began.

He added that after the changes made to the infrastructure, the port now had the capacity to handle 10 million tons of cargo a year.

The rehabilitation of the infrastructure, inaugurated in October by the Mozambican head of state, Filipe Nyusi, cost more than 250 million euros, financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
