The general cargo terminal at the Port of Beira, in Sofala province, central Mozambique, achieved a historic milestone last July, reaching a monthly record of 442,000 tons handled (TEU), compared to 199,000 in the same period last year, representing a growth of 122%.
The information was provided by the operations director of Cornelder Mozambique, Miguel de Jenda, concessionaire of the Port of Beira, who stressed that the growth in imports of clinker and corn in terms of national cargo contributed to this increase, as did the significant increase in imports of wheat, equipment and sulphur to countries in the region.
Quoted by the newspaper Notícias, Miguel de Jenda pointed out that in terms of exports, there has been geographical diversification, with representation from three countries, including the export of local eucalyptus and manganese from Zambia. "Zimbabwe continues to lead the export market through the Port of Beira," added the source.
However, the manager said that overall, the General Cargo Terminal recorded an increase in cargo of 24% in the first seven months of the year, compared to the same period in 2023.
"The Container Terminal, for its part, recorded robust growth of 40% in the first seven months of the year, handling 226,000 containers, compared to 160,000 in the same period in 2023," he said, adding that Zimbabwe continues to boost exports through the Port of Beira, mainly with chrome, lithium, petalite and tobacco.
