The Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), Américo Letela, defended today in Maputo the urgency of revising the Constitution of the Republic of Mozambique (CRM), the electoral package and transforming the Constitutional Council.
"... we align ourselves with the understanding of the need for a thorough revision of the Constitution of the Republic, the codes, the electoral legislation and the transformation of the Constitutional Council into a Constitutional Court and the creation of a Court of Auditors, so that they reflect the socio-economic and cultural reality of the country" he said.
According to the Prosecutor, the current context in the country requires the Public Prosecutor's Office to adopt new attitudes in order to deal with the issues that fall within its remit.
"Recent events challenge us to speed up the reform of electoral legislation, moving towards the adoption of a genuine electoral code that guarantees unity, systematization and stability, not only in terms of the rules, but also in terms of the institutions of the electoral system" he said.
For Letela, it is unacceptable that, cyclically, after each election, the country gets into conflict situations, "which often slip into criminal behavior, with serious consequences for the lives of citizens and for the consolidation of our democracy.".
Letela was speaking today in Maputo, at the opening of the Judicial Year 2025, celebrated under the slogan: "50 Years of Building the Judiciary: New Era, New Challenges".
