Eni announces the start of natural gas production in Area 4 for June 2022

The Italian oil company ENI announced this Friday that the production of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin will start in June next year.

The CEO of Eni, Cláudio Descalzi, assured the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, that the work in Coral Sul is at an advanced stage, highlighting some stages of the project, such as the opening of boreholes for the assembly of the floating platform for gas production, offshore, as well as the steps already taken in the construction of this infrastructure in South Korea.

"The opening of the six boreholes that will embody the project was completed last week, in area 4 of the Rovuma Basin, which was started in September 2019 but had been suspended to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic," said Claudio Descalzi.

For his part, the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, confirmed the progress revealed by Eni's executive, stressing that: "satisfactory progress is being recorded, despite the constraints arising from Covid-19"

"Last week the offshore works were concluded, specifically the opening of the boreholes that will feed the platform," reaffirmed the minister, considering that the steps taken make it possible for the Coral Sul FLNG project to be operational.

The South Coral FLNG Project is implemented by the Area 4 concessionaires in the Rovuma Basin, led by ENI, which as part of their exploration and production activities have discovered 77 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas.
