Ossufo Momade expected in Maputo today

Ossufo Momade esperado hoje em Maputo

Renamo's presidential candidate, Ossufo Momade, is expected in the Mozambican capital this afternoon, where he is due to land at Maputo International Airport.

According to a AIMIn a press conference in Nampula, citing a source from Renamo, the largest opposition party in the country, Ossufo Momade is due to start his election campaign on Sunday (01) in the northern province of Nampula.

On October 9, Mozambique will hold the 7th presidential, legislative and 4th provincial assembly elections.

After Nampula, Ossufo Momade moves on to the neighboring province of Niassa, with the district of Cuamba (Niassa) as his entry point.

Momade is due to speak to the press on Saturday (31), said the Renamo source.

"In principle, one of them, the President or the spokesperson will be able to speak to the media tomorrow (Saturday) in Maputo," said the source.

Momade is running for the Presidency of the Republic for the second time, supported by Renamo.

The other three presidential candidates, Daniel Chapo, Lutero Simango and Venâncio Mondlane, launched their election campaigns last Saturday (24).

Chapo, Simango and Mondlane are running for President of the Republic for the first time, supported respectively by Frelimo, the ruling party, Movimento Democrático de Moçambique, the second opposition party, and Povo Optimista para o Desenvolvimento de Moçambique, an extra-parliamentary party.

Momade's arrival in the country could clarify his whereabouts in recent weeks and disprove reports circulating on social media claiming that the Renamo leader was in hospital abroad.

The promoters of these reports want to justify Renamo's absence from the country's political scene, including its participation in the current electoral campaign.
