The new series of Metical banknotes and coins enter into circulation today throughout the country, the Governor of the Bank of Mozambique, Rogério Zandamela, announced on Saturday.

The notes of one thousand (1000 meticais), five hundred (500 meticais) and two hundred (200 meticais) are produced on durable paper substrate, 100% cotton. And those with a larger circulation, namely one hundred (100 meticais), fifty (50 meticais) and twenty (20 meticais) are produced on a polymer substrate.

The coins They come in seven denominations: one (1 centavo), ten (10 centavos), fifty (50 centavos), one (1 metical), two (2 meticais), five (5 meticais) and ten (10 meticais). The five (5 centavos) and twenty (20 centavos) coins have been withdrawn from circulation. All the coins are of different sizes.

The 2024 series of Metical banknotes and coins has new features, the release of which began this Saturday.

"In essence, they integrate elements about the history, fauna, marine resources and agriculture of our country." Rogério Zandamela mentioned.

According to the governor, the 2024 series of Metical banknotes and coins has benefited from technological advances in recent years in the area of banknote printing and coin minting.

"... they are equipped with modern safety features, and integrate components that make it easier and better for visually impaired people to identify the various designations," he said.

Indeed, the announcement of the entry into circulation of the 2024 series of Metical notes and coins had already been made known to Mozambicans last month.

At the time, Zandamela said that the new series would circulate at the same time as the series of notes and coins issued since July 1, 2006.

The Bank of Mozambique is the institution that plans and designs the Metical notes and coins, and is responsible for putting them into circulation throughout the country.
