The Government of Japan, through the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, awarded Moreira Chonguiça on August 20, 2021, the commendation for "Promotion of Mutual Understanding between Japan and Mozambique", according to the press release published on the official website of that institution. This year, commendations will be awarded to 177 individuals and 41 groups (22 individuals and 5 groups reside in Japan and 155 individuals and 36 groups reside overseas).
According to the weekly Domingo, Moreira Chonguiça is the only Mozambican awarded among the 155 individuals from various countries from all continents, alongside Presidents of the Republic, diplomats, academics, business people, philanthropists, and politicians, among others.
The ceremony, which normally takes place annually, will not be held this year due to the spread of the new variant of the new coronavirus.
The Commendations of the Minister of Foreign Affairs are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields to recognize their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The commendations are also intended to promote Japanese public understanding and support of the recipients' activities.
