Mondlane considers creating a political party and rules out returning to Renamo

Mondlane equaciona criar partido político e descarta regressar à Renamo

The former presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, is considering founding a political party to begin a journey with new battles, which he intends to challenge from the outset.

"It's a probability, yes. It's an idea that hasn't been consolidated, but it's a possibility," he said.

In the view of the politician, who in the general elections of October 9, 2024 had the support of the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS), this would be the best way forward.

"I think it would be the most viable idea to start with something new," he said, not least because, according to him personally, it will serve to challenge and surpass himself.

"I think it would indeed be a challenge to start a new, grassroots political organization, solidified from the local to the national level. I think the challenge is greater than finding a party that is already consolidated and leading it," he noted.

Mondlane was speaking in an interview with MiramarHe also said that his relations with the Renamo party had settled down and that he had already held talks with Ossufo Momade, the leader of the political grouping. He said he had no intention of returning to that political formation. He acknowledged that Renamo has several cadres capable of taking on the leadership and destiny of the party.

"As far as the leadership of Renamo is concerned, I don't see any room for that at the moment. I think Renamo has very competent people there, some of whom were even candidates at the congress," he said.

Mondlane has been a member of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) - the largest in the country; the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) - the second largest political force in Mozambique; and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) - which emerged from a split from RENAMO. It allied itself with the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD) for the October 9, 2024 General Elections. But CAD was excluded from the race and got support from the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOSA). This party dethroned RENAMO in the Assembly of the Republic for the first time in 'democratic' Mozambique and, after FRELIMO, has the largest number of MPs. But Mondlane and the leader of PODEMOS, Albino Forquilha, are on the verge of splitting.
