Mozambique Records Drop in Exports of 24% in the First Quarter

The National Statistics Institute (INE) revealed that in the first quarter of this year trade transactions between the country and the rest of the world had a reduction of 24% in the overall value of trade, reaching a total value of 2,171 million dollars in 2021 against about 2,803 million dollars in 2020.

According to INE, exports decreased in 24%, going from a total of USD 896 million to about USD 684 million, in 2020, as a result of the combined effect of lower prices in the international market and the volume exported of the main products. Despite the general framework of decline, it can be seen that exports showed an increasing behavior during the month of March this year, reaching 291 million dollars.

Despite the restrictions that have been registered in exports, due to the confinement registered in the world economy, Mozambique managed to place in 90 countries several products from large projects.

Among several exporting countries, Mozambique exported in the first quarter of this year electricity, organic agents, and bananas to South Africa; and coal, oleaginous fruits, heavy sands, wood, crustaceans, and soybeans to China.

It also exported briquettes, tetanus minerals, vegetables, cashew nuts and gemstones to India; aluminum to the UK; aluminum, ores, sugars, coal, cashew nuts and tobacco to the Netherlands; and coal, aluminum wire, tea, cashew nuts and graphite to Poland.
